What is CameraWorx?

Note – This website is in development and all content is for test purposes. User accounts are not enabled until the website is officially launched. If you would like to be notified when we go live, enter your email here.

CameraWorx.com is built and operated by me – Robert Axford. I worked as a camera repair technician and fine art photographic printer until the digital era decimated the field in the late 90s. There-after I worked and still work as an intranet and web specialist and run my own web design and hosting business. Some 20+ years ago I was testing various content publishing methods and created Robert Ian Axford’s Camera-Works using photos I had taken of various camera repairs. That website generates a steady stream of traffic and to this day I still answer questions received there.

For a short period, it also hosted a discussion forum. It has long been my intention to rebuild that website into a proper community portal for camera enthusiasts. 20 years later, the cameras and lenses in question have become popular again with a new generation and so I have finally pulled finger and got this off the ground.

The intent with CameraWorx.com is to resolve what I see as the main failing of Facebook groups and other social media websites. When one posts a topic, it is almost immediately lost down the feed and is no longer seen by anyone who didn’t catch it straight away. As well, one’s personal page is not suitable for aggregating content as one tends to have many interests and does not want to mix hobbies and interests with friend and family.

The most useful system for serious ongoing chat and assistance is the traditional discussion forum, where threaded content is grouped and categorised and old information is easily found and reviewed. On CameraWorx I have combined grouped forums with the ability to created your own personal homepage to show and discuss your cameras and lenses, your gear collection, your repairs, restorations and modification projects, and also show off the photos you’ve created.

As a user of forums and community websites for many years, I am aware of the problems they have. Foremost is the expectation by the operator that social media sites ‘create themselves‘ by way of user content. I believe that such websites require an inherit value proposition to become successful. One CameraWorx, that value will be provided my own experience and knowledge in the fields of cameras and photography. I will engage and participate in the community and work to make it a useful and fun experience.

In addition, I will add my own content, both within my own personal page and via the website blog. Content will include reposting of my ancient articles with added images and text, select content from my phone-related YouTube channel, new classic camera-related material, dives into photo nostalgia, and photos and documents. Proposed content included photo critiques and promoted user content.

Obviously all of this is done at great expense in my own time and money and so I intend to try and regain something to keep it all going over time. To that end I will investigate suitable ads and may also add a business membership level. A shop page will also appear where I intend to disperse the many boxes of old camera parts that have been sitting in my basement for many years. The significantly increasing cost of postage may have an affect on whether individual parts can be made available or only complete parts cameras.

And finally, I am still a technician who occasionally works on old cameras and lenses and can accept jobs through the website. The cost of servicing normally means that only worthwhile items can be worked on, but one can always try to do it at home – and that’s what CameraWorx is here for.

Membership levels

Membership is meant to be easy to join in the discussion and offer a simple path for gaining additional benefits. I don’t want a community full of empty profile pages and users who only join to ask one question and then leave. Members who actively participate will be more visible to others.

A caveat with all membership levels is that the account validation procedures may change if fake and bot registrations become a problem.

Anonymous – Everyone can view posts from all forums and view all personal pages without registering a user account. Documents cannot be downloaded and purchases cannot be made.

Basic – In order to post a new question and reply to others, a basic account must be created. Registration will be as simple as possible to help you get on board and involved as quickly as possible.

Standard – Upon completion of your profile, your account will be upgraded to full membership and you will be given your own homepage where you can post albums, discussions and others can see and comment on your content. You will appear in the member directory.

Advanced – This level is reserved for those members who want to get involved in managing their own discussion group on a specialised topic.

Business – Memberships at this level will be allowed to post their own commercial content and will be displayed in the business directory.
